Surfing

Local and international surfers take to the thrilling waves of the Atlantic year round, the best known surfing locations in Donegal are: Rossnowlagh and Bundoran. While others include: Inishowen, Fanad Head, Dunfanaghy, Bloody Foreland and Dungloe . Donegal is rich in waves with stunning backdrop views. Bundoran is a must for any surfer in search of that all important break. ‘The peak’ famous in Bundoran offers a challenge to the most experienced surfer, whilst for the novice, gentle beach breaks such as Bundoran’s Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh strand provide the perfect wave for beginners.

Similar to Donegal, most of the Sligo coastline faces out onto the powerful waves of Atlantic Ocean receiving some of the best wave action around. Aughris, Easkey and Enniscrone are particularly renowned for the quality surf with the seaside village of Strandhill being one of Ireland’s most popular breaks. With beautiful beaches, wonderful waves and stunning scenery, Sligo is a picture perfect surf destination.

When to go?

Spring and autumn are considered to be the best times of year to surf in Donegal and Sligo although there can be good surfing conditions anytime. August and September are generally when the water is at its warmest; temperatures average around 16°C. This dips at the coldest time of year in February/March to around 8°C. From October to April a 5mm wetsuit, boots and gloves are recommended. A 3mm wetsuit is suitable for the rest of the year. As with any outdoor activity, always carry out thorough planning before your trip, put a safety plan in place and wear and carry appropriate safety equipment. In the event of an emergency call 999.
