Neptune’s Staircase, Banavie, Fortwilliam

This dramatic 8-lock flight lies at Banavie, just North of Fort William on the Caledonian Canal. Neptune’s Staircase is an amazing feat of engineering which raises the canal by 19m (62ft) over quarter of a mile of continuous masonry. The UK’s longest staircase lock takes one and a half hours for a boat to pass from one end to the other. Overlooked by Ben Nevis, it is a popular stop for travellers from all directions. And the perfect location to watch boats travel up and down the locks.
