Garelochhead lies, as the name suggests, at the head of Gare Loch 7 miles (11km) northwest of Helensburgh, one of the long fjord-like fingers that extend north from the Clyde Estuary into the southern flank of the highlands.  Loch Lomond is a few miles to the east, and Loch Long to the west.  In addition to the few local shops, pubs and churches, it has a bowling club and a well run Community Centre at the Gibson Hall. Garelochhead is within commuting range of Glasgow. A wander around the head of Gare Loch gives a sense of timelessness, a sense that nothing has changed in a very long time.
