Clean Coasts Roadshow kicks off in Donegal for 2018

15 Mar 2018

The Clean Coasts Roadshow series is about to kick off in Donegal for 2018. They are a series of free events for coastal communities which take place all around the coast of Ireland. It aims to bring together all those with an interest in protecting their local beaches, seas and marine life. The Roadshow events will be a mix of talks and workshops covering topics such as biodiversity, dune systems, marine litter, wildlife, sustainable developments, work by local groups and organizations, etc.

This year includes a special series of Dune Awareness Roadshow stops around Co. Donegal as well as the first major central Seminar Roadshow for the county with special thanks to Donegal County Council.

‘We have all seen how our dune systems change over the years as they go through natural processes of erosion and renewal but often it is necessary for us to give this process a helping hand to protect land, homes and the rich biodiversity that can be found along our coast. I am delighted at the opportunity to run the Dune Awareness Roadshow stops to help communities better understand our dune systems as well as give them the practical skills to tackle erosion in the most natural way possible,’ says Beckey-Finn Britton, Clean Coasts Officer for Donegal and Leitrim.

The Dune Awareness Roadshows will take the shape of practical marram grass planting workshops. This grass is a sand trapping grass naturally found on the coast that can not only help dune systems maintain their positions but reduce blowouts and consolidate areas of loose sands. There will also be discussion on issues affecting out coastline such as marine litter and our use of plastics.

The special Seminar Roadshow will take place on 14th April at the Central Library in Letterkenny. This aims to bring together coastal communities from all around the county to share their experiences as well as have the opportunity to learn more about our coast. Topics will include: marine litter, dune conservation, biodiversity, benefits of interacting with the coastal environment, marine wildlife, etc. Please RSVP for this event here...
