NASA Astronaut visits the MalinWaters of Donegal for some Irish Hospitality

02 Apr 2015

Jon McBride, an accomplished NASA Astronaut who experienced several high profile NASA space missions was in the MalinWaters region of Donegal on the Wild Atlantic Way for 3 nights recently, of which he spent 2 staying in Donegal town with the Browne family of Rossmore Manor B&B and the 3rd night in Carrigart with Bishop Ken Good.

Jon’s ancestors came from county Donegal and Jon and his son were retracing their roots. While in County Donegal they visited, Donegal Castle, Donegal Town Church of Ireland, The ruins of the Friary in Donegal town, Killybegs, Carrick, Sliabh Liag Cliffs, and Ardara. They also played golf on day 3 while also visiting Carrigart.

Jon also gave a presentation to some of the students of the AVS students in Donegal town. Jon is 1 of only approx. 500 people ever to have travelled in space so it was a great honour for the school that he agreed to visit and give a presentation. Geoffrey Browne of Rossmore Manor B&B was delighted that the children of the AVS had the opportunity to meet and hear stories from a real NASA astronaut!

Geoffrey also asked Jon jokingly while at Sliabh Liag what he thought of the spectacular sea cliffs, the highest in Europe and located in the MalinWaters to which Jon replied “This view out of this world, Donegal is just awesome.” This is a real testament to the beauty of the MalinWaters considering Jon has had the opportunity to see some totally breathtaking views of our beautiful country from space!
