Wild Atlantic Shanty Festival agrees “Sister Festival” arrangement with The Baltic Shanty Festival Finland

04 Jul 2018

In an unique move the organisers of The Wild Atlantic Shanty festival in Rosses Point and The Baltic Shanty festival Mariahamn Aaland Islands have entered into a twinning or as they prefer it called a sister festival arrangement. This is the first time such an arrangement has been made between Shanty Festivals in Europe and will allow both Festivals to share learning, research and develop mutual joint projects.

The Finnish Aaland Islands have a great seafaring tradition today, and most notably in the past with a fleet of Windjammers trading grain worldwide. This grain trade brought Finnish corn boats to Sligo up to the late 1940’s and will be well remembered by the older generation.

As part of the new arrangement a Shanty Group Losa Boliner attended this years Festival in Rosses Point. In addition to their performances in the Village the Group performed in Sligo Town and on the Stage of the Hawkes Well for the Gala Concert. Many of the Group are retired sea captains and have a great affinity with all things maritime. The Group were complimentary of the wonderful scenery in the area and most particularly the warmth of the welcome they received from all whom they met. They are already planning next years return to Rosses Point for its 10th Anniversary Festival in June 2019.Picture below.
