Mulroy Bay

Mulroy Bay, Fanad, Co Donegal, North West Ireland

This extraordinary inlet penetrates many miles inland through three sets of narrows and into an almost inland-lake environment. It has many rocks and shoals but the entrance and the outer part of the channel are well marked by new beacons and buoys. There is little in the way of built infrastructure but literally dozens of anchorages offering perfect shelter amid tranquil and scenic surroundings. Full pilotage details are in the ICC Sailing Directions. There are passage anchorages in the outer bay. Entry from seaward through the narrows should be made on a rising tide. Just beyond the First Narrows is Fanny’s Bay, a delightful anchorgae just a mile’s walk over the hill from Downings. The Second Narrows is spanned by a bridge with 19m clearance. Beyond the Third Narrows is the Broad Water, with beautiful scenery, tree-clad surroundings and rocky shoals, many marked by ancient stone cairns.
